One of my favorite drills to practice is the Pump Drill.
You have likely seen something like this before from other creators or professionals. The drill consists of bringing the club to the top of your backswing and pumping your arms down to hip level on the downswing, (P6 to P4 for those positionally savvy players). You want to try and “pump” this a couple of times up and down to get a feel of your hands and the club in space. Make sure you are not rotating towards your target as your arms and shoulders come down from the top of the back swing. After doing so, you can try to finish the swing with these feels in mind. The best part is you can do this with or without a ball!
There are many positives to this drill, but I think, for me, it helps out with getting my rhythm under control and gives my swing a good tempo. I like to get quick from the top at times, which affects my transition, low point, and even release of the clubhead. The pump drill allows me to recognize the different parts of the swing and allows every part to sequence together for clean contact of the ball.
1. Address the ball.
2. Go up to the top of your backswing
3. Bring hands down to hip level while keeping width and right elbow tucked against body, do not rotate.
4. Repeat
5. Once comfortable, rotate and finish your swing.
6. Try out a full swing with those feels.
Try it out, let me know how you get on!
